From the book
James Lexington Morlake, gentleman of leisure, Lord of the Manor of Wold and divers other titles which he rarely employed, unlocked the drawer of his elaborate Empire writing-table and gazed abstractedly into its depths. It was lined with steel and there were four distinct bolts. Slowly he put in his hand and took out first a folded square of black silk, then a businesslike automatic pistol, then a roll of fine leather. He unfastened a string that was tied about the middle and unrolled the leather on the writing-table. It was a hold-all of finely-grained sealskin, and in its innumerable pockets and loops was a bewildering variety of tools, grips, ratchets – each small, each of the finest tempered steel.
The Black eBook Edgar Wallace
I love Edgar Wallace's work. This one has to be my favorite, although The Door With Seven Locks is a close second. The Black follows the exploits of James Lexington Morlake, a notorious bank robber who is known as The Black (hence the title of the book). He is very good at what he does; however, he doesn't rob banks for the simple reason of wanting more money. There is much more to his intentions than meets the eye. The antagonist is a selfish man named Ralph Hamon. As the story unfolds, we find that Morlake and Hamon know each other quite well. There is a lot of action and intrigue as well as travel. It reminds me of the first James Bond movie. My favorite character would have to be Joan Carston. She has quite a head on her shoulders. She is romantically pursued by Hamon all the while falling in love with Morlake. I love this book and enjoy all the twists and turns the story takes. This is not a quick read as the book has 68 chapters. But, if you're like me, you won't be able to put it down.Product details

This is a great book. It was hard to put down. Edgar Wallace books are always suspenseful and keep you on the edge of your seat.
One of the best of the Edgar Wallace's many books. Nice love story with lots of intrigue.
I love Edgar Wallace books! He draws the reader into that actual place and time. The characters become real to the reader, and you are deeply interested from the very first page.
Very entertaining for the first half, then the story moves to Tangier and becomes long tedious and loses credibility. 2.5 stars
